That small action picture in the upper right corner ... It must be from the '90s! I remember we shot one of the early urw-inspired videos. We had bought a pike from a market, then hid the dead pike under water. On the video I made a simple wooden trident, and used that to catch the pike =)

When I was a kid, my father and I used to go out at night with a pressure lantern and wade out into the shallows of the river and gig for suckers and redeyes. I haven't done it for years and years, though, but your post reminded me of it. I will have to do it again. As soon as it is a bit warmer anyway!

Sounds nice! Here the lakes are frozen over, but I hope to do some ice-fishing in February-March when increased amount of daylight makes fish more active again.
Using a pressure lantern to spot fish sounds nice. And they don't dart away even if one wades in the water? I think in Finland that type of fishing is most commonly done with letting the boat glide silently, paddling as little as possible. Nowadays people use a car battery connected to a headlight, but I'd like to try a led lamp (I tried that one autumn, but my light was not good enough to reliably spot the fish).

We moved really slowly, so as to not spook them them, and always went upstream so that our scent would not move towards them. My father told me that the light confuses them and makes them hold still long enough to stick them. But that seems a little far-fetched to me, haha. I was never very good at it, but he and my grandfather were pros.
I really miss the ice fishing... We used to chop holes in a line across the river, and send people up river to come down and pound on the ice with poles, and drive the fish down. Then we snared them out with a loop of wire on the end of a pole.
But it does not get cold enough for the river to freeze here anymore.
