Yes, it is silly to have an "after" picture when there isn't a "before" one =)
In the autumn there was a disorganized heap of logs there - now that has turned to planks, and lots of sawdust. And, already when moving the logs I took some photos thinking about writing a blog post. But then when I had any keyboard time I allocated it to indie development. So, here is the story in a nutshell;
A storm felled a whole lot of trees in nearby forests. And some big ones were in such a place which was not easily accessible with a tractor, so the forest owner said I can have the logs. He offered to drag the logs from the woods using the tractor winch, but I wanted to try with my ATV. The location was a bit tricky to access even with the ATV, and for some 10 or 15 meters I had to move the logs with the ATV winch to get them to a place where I could load on a trailer. Or, the trailer was a very simple and as small as possible, just holding the other end of the log, leaving the rest just dragging behind.
A number of times my make-shift trailer broke down, and I had to rebuild it stronger. And with heavier logs the ATV was not strong enough to climb the steepest part of the uphill. So, again I had to use a combination of the winch, and having short poles under the log so that it would roll over them.
Finally all the logs were next to a road. And then the challenge was to get them loaded on a bigger trailer, for some of the logs were so heavy that I could barely move them. Using a lever and a hand-operated winch and other such mechanics I managed to load even the heaviest logs. And that way eventually I had the logs on my yard, as a disorganized heap waiting to be processed.
Now, the process has a lot of similarities with programming; you make something, it almost works, and then you need to try different fixed to get it working properly. I like this kind of problem solving.
Well, but some time in the autumn I felt unsure if I can process the logs to planks - I was kind of a hoping to earn a bit more money to buy a simple guidance system to saw the planks. Until eventually gathering enough confidence to just go mostly freehand. The planks are of rather crude quality, somewhat uneven, but hopefully good enough.
So, today I feel happy and satisfied to see this empty space with all the sawdust.
Looks like a efficient method to make planks, when are we getting chainsaws in game?
